This species was initially knows as the Shanghai, and then as the Cochin Chin in honour of its homeland.  The arrival of these large round birds in teh USA and Britain in the mid 1840s created a sensation.  They weighed 10 - 12 lbs, but looked even heavier because of their ample soft feathers.  The ginger colour of the first imports was also a novelty.
